NGC 2264 - Christmas Tree Cluster
December 2025
NGC 2264 is a complex star-forming region located approximately 2,500 light-years away in the constellation Monoceros. It contains a rich mixture of young open-cluster stars (the “Christmas Tree Cluster”) and dark molecular clouds, including the Cone Nebula—an active site of ongoing stellar birth shaped by radiation and stellar winds from nearby massive stars. The region’s intricate structure highlights the interaction between ionized hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur within the surrounding nebula.
